It seems those who survived the dastardly terrorist attacks have been rescued from the Oberai, the Trident and the Nariman House. Though I appreciate the unsung heroes and the NSG commandos for their commitment, this is no time for us to celebrate. Something, somewhere seems to go wrong all the time; what we saw now is not an execution of a perfectly planned attack. India has so far seen several terrorist attacks; But never of this kind, storming a hotel, taking people as hostages, killing some of them and finally making no ransom demand so far. However, the area of attacks somehow seem to be upperclass and affluent.
In India, such incidents are followed by a lot of commotion for a few days and our tendency has been to make some post event superficial changes, some condemnations of the act accompanied by horrendous photographs, pictures of some suspicious terrorists, tighten the security in some sensitive areas and port of entries - all these when, even a layman can easily say, there is going to be no further attack as one just got over and then unfastening all these ends, so that we are open for the next attack. This is not going to help us in anyway to stop the next attack planned to happen after six months. Some of the gray areas we have overlooked-
-Our border controls and security remain inadequate.
-Laws are not adequate or strict enough to deal with threats and their causes.
-There is no way to differentiate between a terrorist and a civilian - both come and go around the country in the same way; The basic reason being, we have no common identity across the country; There must be a way where every individual could be identified like the social of the US.
-Above all, we don't give much thought to these attacks after a while; We calm down after a while and just forget what happened
We have to prepare, not just to defend ourselves, but also to retaliate; Being in a defensive mode makes us not just vulnerable, but also weak and projects the country in the same way globally. This is the time for us to Learn from the past.
